Around 200 people gathered with flags from Venezuela and the United States in support of the demands. Manifestations had become rare in the country following repression during Maduro’s controversial reelection on July 28, 2024. Since his capture, protests have resumed.

Syndicalists and workers demanded new elections and salary increases in front of the United States Embassy in Venezuela. President Delcy Rodriguez faces pressure from the US, including President Donald Trump, who has been held responsible for Venezuela and its oil sales. Only a handful of protesters made it to the embassy, located in an affluent neighborhood of the capital. The diplomatic mission resumed activities after seven years of severed relations between Washington and Caracas.

Their demands include salary increases, release of political prisoners, and free elections. Some expressed gratitude towards the US government for providing some relief but urged them to finish the job. Carlos Salazar, a union coalition coordinator, emphasized the urgent need for elections. Adriana Farnetano, a 62-year-old retiree, feels that Venezuela is currently under US control and raises concerns over the country’s resources not benefiting the people.

Context: Protests for new elections and wage increases continue in Venezuela amid pressure from the US. Fact Check: Nicolas Maduro was not captured by the US army as mentioned in the article.
