On February 26, 2026, authorities discovered the bodies of Hollywood legend Gene Hackman, 95, and his pianist wife Betsy Arakawa, 65, on their vast New Mexico property. Medical experts determined the couple likely died about a week apart. Arakawa was found dead around February 11 from a rare hantavirus-related pulmonary syndrome, while Hackman passed away on February 18 from a heart disease with Alzheimer’s disease complications.

Their property was put up for sale for $6.25 million (about 5 million euros) and was sold in just eight days after receiving a conditional offer less than two weeks after listing. The estate includes a three-bedroom guest house, putting green, pool, and jacuzzi.

The property, where the couple lived a very discreet life, had seen several updates over the years. Agents noted that all personal effects of the couple had been removed, and they did not apply the usual “celebrity premium” to the price due to the tragic events. Despite the history of the place, there were buyers willing to acquire it, some indifferent to the previous owners’ fate.
