In the United States, a tragedy unfolded on Tuesday in the city of Omaha, Nebraska. Noemi Guzman, 31, was shot by the police after allegedly assaulting a 3-year-old child with a knife, as reported by ABC News.
According to authorities, the suspect had stolen a knife from a Walmart supermarket before targeting the child who was sitting in a shopping cart. She then allegedly forced the child’s guardian to move under threat, leading them to the store’s parking lot.
Alerted by multiple emergency calls just before 9:15 am, police officers intervened on the scene and ordered the suspect to drop her weapon. Faced with her refusal and after she injured the child, two officers opened fire, fatally hitting her.
The child was hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries and was able to reunite with family. An investigation is underway, and the case will be reviewed by a grand jury, as per the procedures in cases involving police intervention.
