Important Court Ruling Allows Temporary Continuation of White House Ballroom Renovation

In the United States, a federal appeals court has authorized the temporary continuation of renovation work on the White House ballroom, which was initiated by Donald Trump. However, the court has requested clarifications on national security issues.

Last October, the Republican president ordered the demolition of an entire wing of the White House to make way for a ballroom that could host up to 1,000 people for various receptions and dinners in honor of foreign dignitaries. In December, the National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP) took legal action, accusing the Trump administration of not following legal requirements for public inquiry or obtaining authorization from Congress for the project. The project’s budget, funded by private donations, doubled from $200 million to $400 million.

The construction project continues until April 17

Last month, Federal Judge Richard Leon had halted the renovations, dealing a significant blow to one of the most ambitious projects undertaken at the White House in over a century.

In a ruling issued on Saturday, a panel of three judges from the United States Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit decided, by a vote of two to one, to allow the administration to continue the construction until April 17 and “seek review from the Supreme Court.” The ruling also calls for clarification from Judge Richard Leon on issues raised during previous proceedings regarding the project’s safety and security.

The construction of the east wing of the presidential residence has become a particularly dear subject to Donald Trump, who often mentions the progress of the project in public appearances unrelated to the topic.
