President Trump unveiled architectural renderings for the triumphal arch he plans to add to the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The monument would stand near the Arlington Memorial Bridge beside the Arlington National Cemetery. The plans were released by the Commission on Fine Arts and the design firm Harrison Design. The proposed arch, towering at 250 feet, is meant to commemorate America’s 250th birthday.

The structure bears similarities to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, with added symbolic elements like golden eagles and a figure reminiscent of the Statue of Liberty. The words “One nation under God” and “Liberty and justice for all” adorn the arch. Despite its grandeur, the project faced opposition from Vietnam War veterans seeking to halt construction.

The White House stands by the project, stating it will follow all legal requirements for construction. The cost, sources of funding, and the approval process involving various federal agencies are still under review. The completion of the monument is uncertain, with experts expressing skepticism about its realization.

Moreover, the White House has proposed and initiated several architectural projects in the D.C. area, including a neoclassical ballroom at the White House and renovations to the White House Rose Garden and Washington Dulles International Airport. These initiatives have been met with legal challenges and controversy within the architectural community. Additionally, Trump’s executive order mandates traditional design styles for new federal buildings with budgets exceeding $50 million.
