It’s another reminder of how the wars in Iran and Ukraine are connected. In an interview for the podcast The Rest Is Politics, Volodymyr Zelensky claims to have raised the issue of close collaboration between Moscow and Tehran with the White House. According to him, his efforts were in vain. The Ukrainian president suggests that the United States ignored some signals indicating that Russia is helping Iran target American bases in the Middle East. “I said it publicly. Have we heard a reaction from the United States asking Russia to stop?” Zelensky exclaimed. He added, “The problem is that they trust Putin. And that’s unfortunate.”

Accusations of Russian military aid to Iran

Specifically, Russian military satellites allegedly photographed critical energy infrastructure in Gulf countries and Israel, as well as the locations of American military bases in the region. This information was reportedly then passed on to the Iranian regime by the Kremlin to aid their attacks, as claimed by the Ukrainian leader.

However, there was no American reaction. According to Volodymyr Zelensky, Donald Trump’s team failed to “really understand the details of what Russia wants”, with the two negotiators, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, spending “too much time” with Putin and his top officials. Despite visiting Moscow five times, the pair never set foot in Kiev.

“Americans are convinced they can trust Putin,” lamented Volodymyr Zelensky, criticizing the pressure from the Trump administration regarding the Donbass region. “We have to recognize that some Americans feel that the Donbass means nothing to us,” he stated. “They refuse to admit that Putin will lie to them and continue the occupation even after such measures.”

Zelensky condemns Washington’s naivety with Moscow

Zelensky not only criticized the Trump-Witkoff-Kushner trio but also condemned Vice President J.D. Vance’s visit to Hungary this week to support conservative candidate Viktor Orban, close to Vladimir Putin, on the eve of the upcoming legislative elections. This move was deemed “counterproductive” by Volodymyr Zelensky, emphasizing that the election is for the Hungarian people, period.

Given Washington’s ambiguity towards Moscow and its threats to withdraw from NATO, the Ukrainian president also called on the EU to create a military bloc including Ukraine, the UK, Turkey, and Norway. “Without Ukraine and Turkey, Europe will not have an army comparable to that of Russia. With Ukraine, Turkey, Norway, and the UK, you will ensure security across all seas, not just one,” he declared.

Meanwhile, several American media outlets, including CNN, have revealed that Beijing plans to deliver aerial defense systems to Tehran “in the coming weeks.” These reports were denied by the Chinese embassy in Washington, but if confirmed, they would mark a new turn in the ongoing conflict.
