Former Democratic nominee Kamala Harris hinted at the possibility of running for president in the 2028 election, after losing to Donald Trump in 2024. At a civil rights conference, Harris responded to a question about her future plans with uncertainty, saying “Listen, I might, I might. I’m thinking about it.” She emphasized her experience as vice president to Joe Biden from 2021 to 2025 and reflected on her historic nomination as the first Black and South Asian woman in a major US party.

Harris’s road to the nomination came unexpectedly when Biden stepped down in 2024 and endorsed her as his successor. Despite her loss in the general election to Trump, Harris garnered over 75 million votes and was commended by civil rights leader Al Sharpton for her resilience throughout her career. Sharpton suggested that voters should have supported Harris more in 2024, hinting at dissatisfaction with the current Trump administration.

Looking ahead, Harris is among several potential 2028 contenders attending the National Action Network conference, alongside other prominent Democrats like Illinois Governor JD Pritzker and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. As the US heads towards midterm elections, Harris criticized Trump’s foreign policy decisions, calling the conflict with Iran a “war of choice” and expressing concerns about America’s global standing under his leadership.

While Harris openly contemplated a future presidential run, she left the door open for possibilities, stating, “I am thinking about it in the context of then: Who and where and how can the best job be done for the American people? That’s how I’m thinking about it. I’ll keep you posted.”
