Trump warns U.S. military will stay near Iran until real agreement is honored

President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that U.S. military forces will maintain their presence in and around Iran until Tehran fully complies with the agreed terms, warning of a significant military response if those terms are breached.

Trump made the statement on Truth Social, emphasizing that all U.S. ships, aircraft, and military personnel will stay in the region until the “REAL AGREEMENT” is fully upheld. He also noted that the agreement includes provisions that Iran must not develop nuclear weapons and that the Strait of Hormuz will remain open for commercial shipping.

The announcement followed a two-week ceasefire agreed upon by Washington and Tehran, mediated by Pakistan, which temporarily halted the six-week conflict and briefly lifted concerns in global markets about energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran clarified that safe passage through the strait would be allowed with coordination with its armed forces.

Despite the temporary ceasefire, uncertainties remained as the U.S. and Iran had conflicting demands. Tehran rejected a 15-point proposal from Washington and presented its own 10-point plan, including demands related to Israeli actions against Hezbollah in Lebanon and the lifting of sanctions.

In response to reports about Iran’s plan, Trump dismissed it as “totally fake.” Meanwhile, Israel supported the suspension of strikes against Iran but continued its offensives on Lebanon, resulting in casualties. The escalating violence prompted Iran to question the prospects of seeking a permanent peace deal with the U.S.

The ongoing hostilities in the region contributed to a rise in oil prices, with Brent crude futures for June delivery increasing by 2.46% to $97.08, and U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures for May climbing 3.4% to $97.55.

In an interview, Amer Bisat, Lebanese minister of economy, emphasized the toll of the war on Lebanon and reiterated the country’s call for a sovereign-led ceasefire and a negotiated resolution to the crisis.
