Donald Trump’s threat to annihilate Iran has been postponed by two weeks. The United States and Iran have agreed to a 15-day ceasefire in exchange for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
American and Israeli flags are burned in the streets of Tehran. Despite the ceasefire, pro-regime Iranians have gathered to reaffirm their hostility towards Washington. “We cannot trust the United States. Until a Security Council resolution is adopted, we cannot trust them at all,” shared one protester.
In the streets of New York (United States), anti-war protesters are skeptical. “It could all start again in just two weeks, or even sooner. So, it’s a relief, but short-term,” one of them said.
The cessation of hostilities was announced on the night of Tuesday, April 7 to Wednesday, April 8 by Donald Trump. He claims to have won the war: “I agree to suspend bombings and attacks against Iran for two weeks. We have already achieved and exceeded all our goals,” he wrote on his social network.
Iran, on the other hand, announces the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The Islamic Republic is the winner of the conflict according to Michaël Benhamou, director of the European War Institute: “In this long war between Iran, Israel, and the United States, Iran has just won a battle. The Iranians understood that all Trump needed to save face was to reopen Hormuz. This allows Trump to tell his base: look, I have achieved something important.” The United States are considering a face-to-face meeting with Iranian representatives.
