A film project of “Game of Thrones” written by Beau Willimon is in development and could tell the story of Westeros’ conquest by Aegon Targaryen.
And if Westeros finally made its way to the cinema? Years after the end of Game of Thrones, the universe created by George R.R. Martin could undergo another transformation. According to Variety, Warner Bros. is working on a film project based on the saga.
At the helm of the screenplay is a familiar name to fans of series: Beau Willimon, former showrunner of House of Cards and writer of Andor. According to initial information, a first script has already been submitted to the studio, indicating that the project has passed an initial stage, but currently, no director or actor is attached to the film.
If the film comes to fruition, it is expected to go back long before the events depicted in the cult series “GOT.” The story would focus on Aegon I Targaryen, a mythical figure in Westeros’ history. This ruler is known in the saga for conquering the Seven Kingdoms and establishing the Targaryen dynasty, centuries before the birth of Daenerys, an iconic character portrayed by Emilia Clarke in Game of Thrones.
Since the end of Game of Thrones in 2019, HBO has never truly left this universe. The network has continued to explore it with several spin-off series. The most well-known, House of the Dragon, already depicts the internal struggles of the Targaryen family centuries before the original series. Another production, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, focuses on other figures of Westeros.
However, a big unknown remains: will the film actually see the light of day? The project comes at a time when Warner Bros. is undergoing significant changes, with a takeover by Paramount Skydance underway. If the operation is approved, the new management could decide to reconsider the projects currently in development.
