X requires labeling conflict videos generated by AI under penalty of demonetization

In times of peace, pornographic deepfakes and other AI-generated content, especially by paid creators, are acceptable on X. However, in times of war, the platform now requires users monetizing their posts to label content produced through AI if it depicts images of armed conflict.

This new policy applies only to content depicting armed conflicts. If users decide to post AI-generated videos of this type of violence without labeling them, they risk a 90-day monetization program suspension. Further violations of the new measure “will result in a permanent suspension of the program.”

To identify such content, X will rely on Community Notes and generative AI tools, “if the content contains metadata (or other signals),” as mentioned by Nikita Bier. Accounts not monetizing their posts are not affected by the new measure.

Formally, the United States has not declared war on Iran: according to local Constitution, only Congress has the power to do so.

However, fake content depicting armed conflicts has been a disinformation issue for years. While the game Arma 3 was released in 2013, excerpts are regularly misused to falsely illustrate ongoing conflicts on social media. Like in other areas of the information space, the ease of using generative AI tools creates a risk of widespread dissemination of fake content.

Although X already stamps watermarks on generated images and videos with Grok, the company did not previously require users to explicitly disclose their use of AI. According to Social Media Today, X is currently testing a feature to label AI-generated content.
