The president of the Conference of Bishops of France regretted the weakening of international organizations, starting with the UN, which seriously harms peace. In an interview with La Tribune, he described the geopolitical context in which Easter is being celebrated this year as “dramatic and very worrying,” emphasizing the ongoing war in the Middle East and the urgent need to respect international law.

“We can only regret the weakening of international organizations, starting with the UN, which seriously harms peace,” he emphasized. “The security of a people, whoever they may be, cannot be achieved by nurturing hatred towards others,” he judged.

In an appeal for solidarity, he reiterated his call for solidarity with Lebanon, which he described as “always a victim of the great powers surrounding it,” through donations to the Œuvre d’Orient, with which the Church of France provides concrete assistance to the Lebanese people and all Christians in the Middle East.

When asked about the upcoming visit of Pope Francis to France, which will include a meeting with President Macron and a visit to Spain in June, Mgr Aveline confirmed that he is working on it. “I discussed the matter with the Pope a few days ago. For now, we must prepare our hearts to warmly welcome his visit,” he responded.
