On Friday, elected officials from the communist and citizen parties of échirolles, Saint-Martin-d’Hères, Grenoble, and Fontaine announced that they are taking the initiative to form an open metropolitan group for all those who identify with a left-wing transformation, ecological, and solidarity. They call for unity to build a clear and determined metropolitan majority, focusing on strong priorities: defending and developing local public services; ensuring balanced development between all territories, urban and rural, plain and mountainous; restoring the role of municipalities and their elected officials in metropolitan decisions; implementing ambitious policies to address social and ecological emergencies; and promoting an ambitious mobility policy focusing on investment and free transportation.
The members of the group (including Amandine Demore, mayor of échirolles, David Queiros, mayor of Saint-Martin-d’Hères, Alexis Monge, and Isabelle Peters, elected officials in Grenoble) reject a technocratic metropolis that is distant from municipalities and residents. They believe it is imperative to start a new phase of territorial and local democracy with municipal officials and aim for the progressive forces of the new term to work collectively in preparation for the election of the president of Grenoble Alpes Métropole and its executive. They state that their future group will take on responsibilities and propose a candidacy for the presidency of the metropolis, advocating for a clear project: a fairer, more ecological metropolis fully dedicated to serving municipalities and their residents.
