Former French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin described the ongoing intervention in the region as a gamble, stating on France Inter on Monday, March 2. The United States has launched a series of strikes on Iran since Saturday, with Israel. According to Dominique de Villepin, the Americans “will pay a high price for this neglect of international order.”
“We must of course rejoice in the fact that a regime that has fired on its children, a regime that is now causing suffering to the Iranian people, is weakened,” acknowledged the former minister, as the supreme leader Ali Khamenei was reportedly targeted in a strike on Saturday. However, he expressed concerns about the weakening of international law and “a war that could become regional.”
He believes that this intervention “is a gamble.” “The bet is to strike from above in the hope that when the time comes, the people below will have the strength, will have the means to react and take power to lead themselves,” explained Dominique de Villepin. He also warned of the risk of a hardening of the regime.
According to the former minister, the Iranian regime is not at all collapsing. It retains significant means and the capacity to suppress its people. He criticized Donald Trump’s strategy, calling it reckless, and emphasized that the president will have to face the consequences of the unfolding tragedy in the region.
Addressing the “imperial logics” that prioritize domination, Dominique de Villepin highlighted the contradictions in America’s discourse and warned of the potential destabilization of the entire region.
He also raised the issue of negotiation following the decision by Israel and the United States, questioning the use of force while negotiations on the Iranian nuclear issue were in progress in Oman. He criticized the imperial logics that prioritize power and force, predicting that the United States and Donald Trump will pay a high price in the coming years.
