Previously in charge of Comoros and Mauritania, Franco-Comorian Amir Abdou has been named the coach of Burkina Faso.

Burkina Faso has found its new coach. Amir Abdou has been appointed to this position “after a call for applications followed by a rigorous examination of the different profiles,” announced the Burkinabé Football Federation (FBF) on its official channels.

Having been in charge since July 2025 at Hassania Agadir in Morocco, the Franco-Comorian technician succeeds local coach Brama Traoré, who was dismissed following the last African Cup of Nations. At 53 years old, the new coach “brings with him a solid experience in African national teams, having led Comoros for nearly eight years (from 2014 to 2022) and Mauritania for over two years (from 2022 to 2024),” emphasizes the FBF. His goal will be to revive the Stallions who have been eliminated in the round of 16 of the AFCON twice.

Historic story of the Coelacanths

After starting at the regional level in France, Amir Abdou then structured an embryonic Comorian national team, which had been stuck at the bottom of the FIFA world rankings. Under his leadership, the Coelacanths managed to qualify for their first AFCON finals. This was for the 2021 edition, played at the beginning of 2022 in Cameroon. The debut was a masterstroke for the coach who simultaneously coached FC Nouadhibou in Mauritania: not only did they advance from a very tough group (Morocco, Gabon, Ghana), but Youssouf M’Changama and his teammates also challenged the host country in the round of 16 despite the suspension of a dozen players who tested positive for Covid-19.

The next chapter saw the coach take over the Mourabitounes, the Mauritanian national team, with a notable victory against Algeria and a historic participation in the round of 16 of the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast. The FBF specifies that Amir Abdou will lead his first matches at the helm of the Stallions starting in March 2026, during the next FIFA window. The opponents for Burkina Faso in these friendly matches have not yet been announced.
