Sanctions are expected to rain down. This Sunday, a District 2 (10th division) football match in Morbihan ended in a general brawl. After the derby between Avenir de Guilliers and Indépendante de Mauron ended in a draw (2-2), a violent altercation broke out between several players and supporters.
According to Ouest-France, the brawl started at the edge of the field. As supporters from both sides were taunting each other throughout the match, directing insults towards the touchline referee and the players, the father of a Mauron player found himself in the middle of a brawl. His son joined to defend him, before dozens of other people joined the fray.
Violent blows were reportedly exchanged, especially among the players. 24 of them were eventually expelled by the referee, Jason Arnaud, who detailed the scuffle and the actions of the different individuals involved. The gendarmerie of Ploërmel was called in for backup and helped “calm the situation down,” according to Pascal Menier, president of the Mauron club. However, no arrests were made.
Heavy sporting sanctions are now expected. The disciplinary committee of the Morbihan district will be responsible for determining the responsibilities of each party and possibly issuing suspensions. With 13 individuals involved in Guilliers and 11 in Mauron, both teams will struggle to field lineups in the next championship match.
